Nana Star
by Foreword Magazine
Nana Star and the Moonman is a delightful children's picture book about Nana Star, who has taken it upon herself to return a homesick baby star to the heavens where he belongs. With the help of the Moonman, who is always watching over her and guiding her even when she can't see him, she comforts the baby star as she returns him to his rightful place in the sky. An accompanying read-aloud CD with a bonus "Nana Star and the Moonman Song" enhances this wonderful children's picture book with simplistic color illustrations, ideal for bedtime reading.
Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI)
By Linda Pliagas
Grandmothers know how to captivate an audience with their stories. Authors Elizabeth Sills and Elena Patrice wanted to pay a tribute to the engaging tales and lively characters developed by their nana, so they created books and toys based her stories.
They wanted not to just merely sell product, but they have a higher goal in mind: to change the world one book and one child at a time.
“We create children’s books and toys with high play and imagination value because we believe that the world would be a happier place if kids got to be kids just a little bit longer and if grownups greeted each day with more of the wonder we love in our children,” says Patrice.
Nana Star’s adventure begins with a lost baby star that needs help getting back home. This book is very special because it encourages traditional values such as compassion, kindness, and generosity -- traits that unfortunately seem to be diminishing in our times.
The beautifully-illustrated picture book, Nana Star, was created to build character in your youngsters. It promotes positive values in a simple and imaginative manner.
What I loved the most about this book is the beautiful, vintage-inspired illustrations, which are found inside. Each book is accompanied by a story-time CD with contagious sing-along songs. One of the most creative aspects of the book is the intentional spelling mistake purposely left behind in print for children to uncover. Once the typo is found, readers can then become members of Nana Star’s Little Twinkles Club. The book club for beginners encourages emerging reading skills and provides a fun language arts activity. Newest members of the Little Twinkles Club will also receive an autographed photo of the real Nana Star with a personalized message, as well as a certificate of membership. Most book authors would be devastated if a grammatical error went unnoticed and made its way into a finished copy, but Patrice wanted to make certain that children realize that nobody is infallible, even grown-ups: “Everybody makes mistakes sometimes, but Nana Star believes that even with those mistakes, we can still create something beautiful. She reminds children that only God can make all things perfect!” Children of all ages will enjoy reading Nana Star and listening to the companion sing-along CD, a huggable (and posable) Nana Star doll can also be purchased for only $21.99.
After reading Nana Star your children will want to continue with their brilliant adventure by adding the next book in the Nana Star series to their collection, Nana Star and the Moonman.
A portion of all Nana Star product sales goes to The Nana Star Foundation, which helps terminally ill children and under-resourced inner-city schools. The company also donates hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of books and toys to charity, schools, libraries, and children’s hospitals around the country every year.A little girl's magical journey to return a golden star to its celestial home.
A young, stick figure of a girl in a bright blue dress happily plays in a sunny field of wildflowers, as birds and butterflies flutter around her. She wiles away her time, finding nature shapes in fluffy clouds and twirling about to amuse herself. When she tires, she settles for a nap amidst a pile of picked flowers. But she awakens to the sound of a frightened little voice, calling for its "Nana." In a nearby pile of leaves, the girl discovers a tiny, golden star that has fallen from the sky. She assures the star that she will care for him and be his "Nana Star" until she can find a way to return him to his home in the sky. With the help of an old tree and the Moonman, Nana and her golden charge embark upon their journey. Cheery full-page, cartoon-like illustrations of watercolor and ink add movement and depth to the prose. The protagonist has a fairy princess appeal that personifies compassion and generosity. This story would work well with a group of preschoolers, but its quiet, intimate tone makes it an ideal candidate for a gentle bedtime read. Nana Star comes packaged with a read-along audio CD of excellent sound quality; its pleasant narration underscored by a soothing melody reminiscent of the classic "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." The disc also includes an activity in which young listeners are encouraged to find a hidden, misspelled word in the text and send their answers to the authors to receive a picture prize, illustrating that even imperfections can be special. The authors' grandmother originated the Nana Star character to reassure her grandson of her love whenever they were apart. But the story's warmth and charm invites all young readers to share in its encompassing sense of belonging, safety and peace.
A golden tale of love and friendship.

The man in the moon offers comfort and guidance to a little girl and her star in this simple, illustrated tale of friendship, the second in the Nana Star series.
In a world that is sunny and bright, Nana Star and baby star set off on a journey to return baby star to his celestial home. As the two friends make their way through fields and forests, they are joined by birds, bunnies and bees in a joyous medley of nature. When they grow hungry, Nana Star stops to pick ripe berries to share with her golden protégé. But as the shadows descend, Nana Star becomes fearful of the night–until the man in the moon appears. Moonman gently lights the dark, pointing the pair in the right direction and offering assurances that he will watch over them throughout the evening. This simple story, written by two sisters and illustrated by their mother (Nana Star, 2007, etc.), subtly inspires with a message of unconditional love. Moral values of friendship and trust are encouraged. The authors appeal to emotions common in young children, like fear of the dark, loneliness and homesickness. Adults will find this book appropriate for group and one-on-one readings. Although the story goes into more detail than the first volume of the series, the language remains easy to understand, and the text's large, black font is surrounded by plenty of white space, which makes for easy reading. Full-page watercolor, marker and ink illustrations contain colorful visual vignettes that add profundity and dimension. The book is also accompanied by an audio CD that incorporates a calming read-along narrative to the story and an original folk song. Educational activities, such as misspelled wordplay, and an invitation to join "Nana Star's Little Twinkles Club" are appended to the story, along with a web address for a virtual Nana Star community.
Delightful, feel-good book with a positive message.

Nana Star is beautifully written by Elizabeth Sills and Elena Patrice with illustrations by Linda Saker. This is a story for 3 to 5 year olds. Nana Star finds a lost baby star that needs help. This story teaches helping other because it's the right thing to do, not because you will receive a reward.
Collaboratively written by Elizabeth Sills and Elena Patrice for children ages 3 and older, and featuring unusual "stick figure" style drawings combined with detailed artwork (especially the flowers) by Linda Saker, and accompanied by an audio CD reading of the original tale, Nana Star is the picture book story of a little girl who discovers a lost baby star. The poor baby star needs help to reach the heavens where it belongs! Illustrated in a very distinctive style, portraying Nana Star in her blue dress with line-thin arms and legs and a smiling face amid flowers, trees, and clouds, Nana Star is a charming story about doing a good deed because it is the right thing to do. An accompanying audio CD offers read-aloud narration and the catchy Nana Star song. A delightful and upbeat picture book especially for young girls."

My daughter loves Nana Star! She sings the song while we dance to it. I really like it too and don't mind hearing it 20 times in a row. Thank-you!
I like Nana Star because she has a pretty dress. Her hair is wavy like the ocean. I also like when she saved the boy star and when she made him feel closer to home up in the sky. That is all I wanted to write to you guys. Good-bye.
I am a new grandmother and a teacher of ESL (English as a Second Language). I look forward to becoming more familiar with your organization.
Thanks for having the nice site. I enjoyed it. I believe in what you are doing. Keep moving forward!
I stumbled up on your site because I, too, am a children's book writer. Keep up the great work!
My daughter heard you read at Barnes and Noble last week and just loves the book!
I loved reading about your story-I also see the value of helping others and have been instrumental in helping to set up schools in Liberia, Guatemala, and I help locally as well. If you are looking for other products to donate and see a fit with our product line, give me a call and let's see what we can do.
Simply put, this is a children's book with everything a reader could want. A wonderful story that all can relate to, distinctively beautiful illustrations and many virtuous lessons for all. ...When the little girl becomes Nana Star, she shows the empathy and compassion we hope for from ourselves and our children. Using words like "big job" and "counted on," encouragement and integrity shine through.
The book itself is one that you may want to display and protect from becoming worn and soiled, but because of the story and illustrations I don't think your children will let you. ...Children never want the story to end.
